HISTORY

Continental Circus (c) 1987 Taito.

NOTE:

- Continental Circus is a F1 racing game, featured dynamic weather and pitstops. This is probably the first arcade driving game to possess these features. It is believed that the word "circus" resulted from a bad translation from japanese to english, and this game name should actually be "Continental Circuit". However all the following home conversions would also be named "Continental Circus".

WIP:

- 0.148u5: MASH changed "Gear Shift" to LOW by default for Continental Circus.

- 0.148u1: ShouTime and The Dumping Union added clone Continental Circus (Japan). Brian Troha added Continental Circus B33 Taito rom prefix.

- 0.146u1: hap removed fake digital steeringwheel from Taito Z driver. Improved analog controls for Continental Circus. Changed input to Paddle, Dial, Pedal and 3x buttons.

- 0.143u4: MASH added missing PORT_TOGGLE to Continental Circus gear shifters input.

- 0.133u1: Renamed (contcrcu) to (contcircu) and (contcrua) to (contcircua).

- 0.129u6: Mr. Do added built-in layouts for Continental Circus.

- 9th July 2008: Mr. Do - Continental Circuit (Circus?) now has a bezel thanks to Zorg.

- 0.125u9: Changed 'Unknown' to 'Unused' dipswitches.

- 0.124u2: Nicola Salmoria fixed audio emits from one speaker on start up. Removed button 8. Added 4x Volume Filters and 3rd sound channel.

- 0.99: Nicola Salmoria fixed road/sprite priority (cars no longer disappear when they go over a hill in Continental Circus). Removed bogus ROM containing 1989 copyright year. Someone hacked the copyright year from 1987 to 1989, and changed an unused byte from FF to F3 to keep the checksum the same. Added user2 proms ('road/sprite priority and palette select' and 'road A/B internal priority').

- 0.93: Removed Custom sound.

- 0.82: Added clone Continental Circus (US set 2). Changed parent description to 'Continental Circus (US set 1)'.

- 0.62: Added dipswitches 'Difficulty 1 (time/speed)', 'ifficulty 2 (other cars)', 'Steering wheel' and 'Enable 3D alternate frames'.

- 0.57: Changed visible area to 320x224. Added 'Default screen type' dipswitch.

- 4th September 2001: David Graves improved the road colors in Continental Circus.

- 0.53: David Graves added Continental Circus (World) (Taito 1987) and clone (US).

- 0.37b11: David Graves added Continental Circus (World) (Testdriver). Known issues: No road. Wheel control poor-ish. Stuff often written in high byte of sound word, don't think it matters.

* FB Alpha

* Raine

0.37b11 [David Graves]

TODO:

- Is the no-Z80 sound handling correct: some voices in Bshark aren't that clear.

- Make taitosnd cpu-independent so we can restore Z80 to CPU3.

- Cockpit hardware

- DIPs - e.g. coinage

- Sprite zooming. Dimensions may be got from the unused 64K rom on the video board (it's in the right place for it, both with Contcirc video chips and the chips used on later boards). These 64K roms compare as follows - makes sense as these groups comprise the three sprite layout types used in TaitoZ games.

NOTES:

- Driver based on the MAME F2 driver and Raine source.

- The Taito Z system has a number of similarities with the Taito F2 system, and uses some of the same custom Taito components.

- TaitoZ supports 5 separate layers of graphics - one 64x64 tiled scrolling background plane of 8x8 tiles, a similar foreground plane, another optional plane used for drawing a road (e.g. Chasehq), a sprite plane [with varying properties], and a text plane with character definitions held in ram.

- Double Axle has four rather than two background planes, and they contain 32x32 16x16 tiles. This is because it uses a TC0480SCP rather than the older TC0100SCN tilemap generator used in previous Taito Z games. The hardware for Taito's Super Chase was a further development of this, with a 68020 for main CPU and Ensoniq sound - standard features of Taito's F3 system. Taito's F3 system superceded both Taito B and F2 systems, but the Taito Z system was enhanced with F3 features and continued in games like Super Chase and Under Fire up to the mid 1990s.

- The Z system has twin 68K CPUs which communicate via shared ram.

WIP:

- 0.146u1: hap removed fake digital steering wheel hack from Taito Z driver. Cleanup cpua_ctrl_w. Removed outdated changelog. Fixed some Racing Beat issues, it's playable now.

- 0.139u3: Aaron Giles fixed "16-bit EEPROM set with 8-bit data" in Taito Z driver.

- 0.136u1: Added includes\taito_z.h. Fabio Priuli added driver data struct and save states to Taito Z driver.

- 0.135u2: Fabio Priuli converted the Taito Z driver to use EEPROM device.

- 0.133u3: Taito Z dipswitch fixes [Kanikani].

- 0.133u2: Kanikani cleanup dipswitches in Taito Z driver.

- 0.130u3: Aaron Giles merged memory maps in Taito Z driver.

- 0.129u6: Mr. Do added layout\contcirc.lay and dblaxle.lay.

- 0.125u9: Kanikani added DIP locations to all Taito Z games.

- 0.124u2: Nicola Salmoria added missing TC0060DCA sound mixer to the Taito Z driver.

- 0.123u3: Fixed sound comes only out of the left speaker in aquajack, aquajackj, contcirc, nightstr and sci.

- 0.119u1: Brian Troha cleaned up input ports in the Taito Z driver.

- 0.99: Updated the Taito Z driver [Nicola Salmoria]: Fixed road/sprite priority (cars no longer disappear when they go over a hill in Continental Circus). Added PROMs and other minor changes.

- 29th September 2002: David Graves sent in a Taito Z driver update with dipswitch fixes.

- 13th August 2002: Brian Troha submitted dipswitch fixes for Space Gun and Continental Circus.

- 22nd September 2001: David Graves fixed a few more graphics problems in the Taito Z driver.

- 0.55: Preliminary road support in the Taito Z games [David Graves].

- 10th September 2001: David Graves cleaned up the Taito Z graphics emulation and road transparency.

- 9th September 2001: David Graves yet improved the Taito Z road graphics emulation.

- 2nd September 2001: David Graves added preliminary support for the Taito TC0150ROD road graphics chip used in the Taito Z games, and he also optimized the sprite drawing in Top Speed.

- 28th August 2001: David Graves updated the Taito Z driver fixing crashes in Night Striker.

- 0.53: Palette compression has been removed. palette_recalc(), palette_transparent_pen and palette_used_colors[] are not available anymore. Drivers that relied on PALETTE_COLOR_TRANSPARENT for transparency effects must be rewritten to implement them differently. As a result of this, all games using the Taito TC0480SCP video chip are broken in this release.

- 29th May 2001: David Graves streamlined the I/O handling in most of the Taito 68k based games, cleaned up several things and added default gun calibration values for Space Gun, Operation Thunderbolt and Under Fire.

- 24th April 2001: David Graves did some minor improvements to the Taito Super Z system driver.

- 24th February 2001: David Graves fixed a few graphics glitches in the newest Taito drivers and integrated InsideOutBoy's Space Gun target crosshair code in.

- 0.37b11: Added taito_z.c driver and vidhrdw\taito_z.c. TODO: NB: Some historic comments related to fixed issues have been left in for reference. They are enclosed in square brackets. Obviously they can be ditched as soon as the basic remaining problem - emulating the TC0150ROD - is solved. Add CPU idle time skip to improve speed. Is the no-Z80 sound handling correct: some voices in Bshark aren't that clear. Make taitosnd cpu-independent so we can restore Z80 to CPU3 and dipswitches.

- 14th January 2001: David Graves added double width tilemap support to the TC0480SCP chip emulation.

- 12th December 2000: David Graves sent in an updated version of the Taito Z driver, and Space Gun is now fully working.

- 4th December 2000: David Graves added support for a third Taito TC0100SCN chip emulation.

- 1st December 2000: David Graves updated the TC0100SCN Taito chip emulation to support extra wide tilemaps.

- 7th October 2000: Jarek Burczynski sent in an update for the Taito sound system, improving several Taito Z games' sound.

- 6th October 2000: David Graves sent in a bit improved Taito Z driver with no playable games.

- 14th September 2000: David Graves sent in a preliminary Taito Z driver, but none of the games work acceptably yet.
